No Sew Plaid Fleece Blanket

I love using fleece to make cozy, no sew blankets. It's comforting to curl up with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book on a cold day under one of these. You can find kits to make no sew blankets at most craft stores, but the blankets are not that difficult to create on your own.

Fleece is a great fabric to work with. It's soft and warm. It doesn't fray or unravel when you cut it. And, if that's not enough, it doesn't have a "wrong" side. You can make a no sew blanket with any color or pattern of fleece you like, if you don't mind doing a little measuring. However, if you pick a nice plaid, you can use the lines in the pattern as guides to cut straight lines when making this a shamefully easy project.

  • 2 1/2 yds of 58 inch wide plaid fleece
  • 2 1/2 yds of 58 inch wide coordinating solid color fleece
  • scissors
  • ruler (optional)

Before you begin, it's always a good idea to wash your fabric.

Lay out the solid color piece of fleece. If you have a table large enough to spread your fabric out, that's great. I don't, so I had to work on the floor.

Smooth out all the wrinkles.

Lay your plaid fleece over the solid color making sure the edges are lined up as much as possible.

Next, using the pattern of the fabric as a guide, cut the selvage off each side. Make sure you are cutting through both the plaid and solid layers of fabric.

I wanted my blanket to be symmetrical, so I cut to the outside of the black stripes on each side.

Now that you have trimmed the sides, you need to trim the ends in the same way. Again, make sure you are cutting through both the plaid and solid color fabric.

Before you begin cutting the fringe you need to cut a square from each corner of the blanket. It's important that you cut out a square, not a rectangle if you want all the fringe to be the same length.

The squares should be about seven inches on each side. You can use the plaid as your guide. It's not a big deal if your squares are a little bit bigger. It just makes the fringe a little longer and the body of your blanket a little smaller.

It's time to start cutting the fringe around the blanket.  I used the thick stripes as my guide. I cut from the edge of the fabric, up the stripe the same length as the squares that were removed from each corner.

The fringe was a little too wide, so I cut each strip in half, lengthwise.

It's easiest to tie the fringe pieces together if they are between 3/4 - 1 1/4 inch wide.

Once the fringe is cut all the way around the blanket, you can begin tying it together. Start at a corner. Take the first piece of plaid an solid fringe and tie them together into a knot. Make sure it is secure, but not too tight.

Continue tying the fringe all the way around the blanket.

In less than an hour, from start to finish, you can create a thoughtful gift for a friend, loved one, or maybe even yourself.

Stay warm and happy crafting!
