Oh, So Organized!

I love to organize things! It can be anything from pieces of data, to photos, to craft supplies. I was recently telling my mother-in-law that you can tell what kind of mood I am in by looking in the door of my studio. If there are piles of supplies and half-completed projects, I am probably a little overwhelmed by life. If everything is in order in the studio, everything is in order in my life.

In an effort to add some color and organization to my life studio, and keep some of my favorite tools in reach, I came up with this project. My inspiration for came from some pictures I saw on DIYlife in a post about ways to use pegboard outside of the garage. They had some non-traditional ways to incorporate pegboard into the home.

  • 2 pieces of 12" x 24" pegboard
  • latex paint in white and two other colors
  • painter's tape
  • small paint roller or 2-3 inch paint brush
  • paint tray (if you are using a roller)
  • drill
  • pegboard mounting screws and spacers
  • assorted pegboard hooks and containers

Start by laying your pegboard, smooth side up, on a covered work surface.

I chose to use paint colors I had leftovers of. Not only did it cut down on the cost of the project, but it was also way for me to incorporate colors that I already have in my home.

Paint both pieces of your pegboard white. It's okay if the paint fills the holes, you can poke them out later.

I thought it was easier to use a roller than a brush for this part.

If you need to, you can apply a second coat after the first coat is dry.

Once the white paint is dry, tape off your design. I chose to do squares. It was easy to use the holes in the pegboard as guides to lay down the tape.

Make sure your tape is pressed down firmly.

Paint the squares one color. I used a 2 inch brush.

If you need to, you can paint a second coat after the first coat dries.

Paint the triangles a contrasting color.

Again, you can paint a second coat after the first coat dries.

Once all the paint has dried completely, remove the tape.

Now it's time to mount the pegboard to the walls.

Mark and drill holes where you want to mount your pegboard. Use the mounting screws and spacers to attach the pegboard to the wall. It's important to use the spacers between the pegboard and the wall so there is a gap between them. It makes it much easier to attach the hooks and containers later.

Now the fun part, attaching the hooks and adding your tools. There are lots of different shapes and sizes of hooks available at the hardware store. You can buy one type of hook or a variety, like these.

I got a variety so I could hang different things on my pegboard. I also got some trays and containers I could attach to the pegboard. One of my pegboards is for general craft and hobby supplies, and one is for sewing supplies.

I initially planned on hanging the two pieces side by side, but eventually decided to separate them with another one of my favorite tools, my cutting mat.

By the organized look of things, life is good!
