Learning Something New in 2013

Three cheers for Jacquelyn at Musings by Jacquelyn. She will be the recipient of this handmade perpetual calendar and cardholder for my January Giveaway. She participated in the giveaway by sharing what she would like to learn this year, knit.

I enjoy a lot of crafts, but knitting is my all time favorite. I always have a knitting project in progress. Right now I'm working on a pair of blue and purple socks. I love making scarves, sweaters, hats, scarves, ponchos, shawls, wraps... You name it, I can knit it.

I taught myself how to knit when I was in high school. Yeah, I was that cool. Over the years I have found a few books about knitting that I still refer to frequently when I am designing projects. Novice knitter to pro, these books are an invaluable addition to you crafting library.

For Beginning Knitters

My most used crafting book is the Complete Guide to Needlework. This book has all the basics about how to knit (as well as crochet, quilt, do needlepoint and more). It has great illustrations showing everything from casting on and binding off, increasing and decreasing stitches, joining pieces together and even how to fix mistakes. You can learn how to read a stitch chart and what the most common knitting abbreviations mean. There are also a number of common stitch patterns.

For Intermediate Knitters

Once you have the basics of knitting down you may want to venture out a little and try designing something on your own. But how can you combine those little knits and purls together into something pretty? Flip through The New Knitting Stitch Library to see hundreds of stitch patterns. There are basic knit and purl patterns as well as cables and lace. This book has been my starting point for countless scarves, sweaters, hats and more.

For Advanced Knitters

Scarves sweaters, hats and more. That's what you can create with the Knitter's Handy Book Of Patterns. It doesn't matter what size you are, what kind of yarn you are using, or what size your knitting needles are. This book walks you through the process of designing and making perfectly sized apparel.

Happy knitting and good luck with whatever you hope to learn in 2013!
