Decorative License Plate

It happened over spring break. My sixteen year old became a licensed driver with a new (to her) used car. Her car came with a front license plate holder, which is not really necessary in Arizona because the state only requires you to display a rear plate. So, she asked if she could get a decorative plate to display on the front of her car. No problem. I am an avid internet shopper, so I was certain we could find something online.

That's exactly what I did a few years ago when I got a new car that also had a front plate holder. I found a cute little Roadrunner plate. The color went my turquoise car and roadrunners are pretty commonplace here in Arizona.

My daughter wanted to get a Coyote to match my Roadrunner. That's sweet. I began my quest, only to find that the Coyote plates available just weren't that cute. Then I thought, why not just make one.

  • plain aluminum plate
  • spray paint
  • auto decal
  • vinyl lettering and transfer paper (optional)
  • clear spray paint

Even though I couldn't find a decorative Coyote license plate online, I was able to find a variety of Coyote decals. I ended up purchasing this one of the Coyote scheming his next plan, on Amazon. Of course, you can use whatever character or design you choose. Just make sure the decal is for outdoor use and is less than 6" tall.

I also bought (1) BLANK "BLACK" ALUMINUM LICENSE PLATES 6"x12" on Amazon.

Since my plate says "Beep Beep," we decided that the Coyote plate should have words as well. My daughter settled on "Super Genius." I used my favorite tool, my Silhouette Cameo, to cut out the vinyl lettering.

Let's get started.

Once you have all your materials, begin by removing the clear plastic cover from the black side of the plate. Spray paint the plate the color of your choice. Apply 1-2 coats of paint. Let the paint dry completely.

Once the paint is dry, apply your decal and lettering.

Finally, spray 1-2 coats of clear spray paint over the entire plate.

It doesn't take a super genius to know what the next step is. Once the clear paint is completely dry, attach the plate to your car.

Now you are ready to go, in style.
