Trial and Error

One of my favorite parts about blogging is the amazing people I have come in contact with along the way. It's always encouraging when someone e-mails or comments that they have enjoyed a particular post or project. Recently I received a note from Suzanne. (Check out her Etsy shop,  ItseeBitsee.) Suzanne created an Etsy treasury called Play Ball that I featured a couple of weeks ago for Fun Find Friday. After the feature, she wrote to me.

"Love your Blog...you...like me have to keep busy...and you like me just do it...trial and error....LOVE IT!!!!"

Trial and Error... Those words so often capture the essence of my creative process.

I am always on the lookout for a good upcycling project. One day as I was surfing the internet I ran across these great paper bowls.

I was inspired. What a great idea! I can make something like that. All I need to do is make some paper tubes and just weave them around and around. Right?

Making the paper tubes was the easy part. The process is similar to making paper beads. I cut magazine pages into 2 inch strips, wrapped each strip diagonally around a bamboo skewer and used Elmer's glue to secure the end. Once all the tubes were made, I connected them end to end and glued them together into a long rope. Piece of cake.

Then the trials and errors began.

Bowl #1: Hideous Bird's Nest

What happened? Over, under, over under. I know that's how weaving is done. But clearly this isn't what I imagined.

What I learned - I need to weave around some sort of form so my bowl looks like, well, a bowl. Also, something's not quite right about the bottom. Hmm...

A few days passed as I rethought the process and I was ready to make another attempt.

Bowl #2: Odd Not Even

This time I covered two tagboard circles with paper to create the bottom of the bowl. I glued the ribs of the bowl evenly in between the circles. And then I began weaving. Over, under, over, under... over, over? Wait. What just happened? Let me try again. Over, under, over, under... over, over.

What I learned - The bowl needs an odd number of ribs for the weaving to work smoothly.

A few more days passed while I gathered the confidence to try again.

Paper covered tagboard for the bottom.

Odd number of ribs.

Weave around a nice form so the bowl holds it's shape.

And voila! Bowl #3 finally looks like a bowl!

Moral of the story, don't give up. Crafting isn't always easy. Some projects don't work out the way you plan, but you can learn something from the process. Keep trying and expect excellence. You can achieve it with practice, perseverance and patience.

LOVE IT? SHARE IT. MAKE IT.
