More Fun than a Barrel of Monkeys!

I love unique projects. That's why I was so intrigued by my friend Jaquelyn's current endeavor. Her family is planning an "Epic Sock Monkey Christmas." Their vision is to have everything from sock monkey Christmas tree ornaments, to an inflatable holiday sock monkey in the front yard. I'll be the first to admit, that holidays are not my favorite days of the year. If you have been following my blog for very long, you have already noticed a lack of holiday themed projects, especially compared to other craft bloggers. However, when Jacquelyn asked if I would be interested in creating a sock monkey Christmas tree skirt for their epic holiday, I simply could not resist the opportunity to be a part of such a fun celebration.

Before getting started, I Googled pictures of sock moneys, how to make authentic sock monkeys, sock monkey fabric, basically anything sock monkey related, to get an idea of what I was getting myself into. Now, I can't say that I have ever paid much attention to sock monkeys before, but seriously, they are just so darn cute. You can't help but smile when you see one.

My plan for the Christmas tree skirt is a bit unconventional, but I think that's okay for a project like this. I am in the process of designing and creating a knit tree skirt. Since socks are knit, it seemed like the perfect technique. My vision is twelve little monkeys, side by side, toes at the center, with their arms linked in a criss-cross star.

I started the first section, but it's going slow because I am diagramming each stitch as I work so I can replicate the piece exactly eleven more times.
