Fairy Houses - Luminaria Paint Can

The first house for my fairy village was made from an old piece of pottery. This house is made from a quart sized paint can. If you aren't in to the whole fairy garden idea, you could easily modify this project to make luminarias.

One of my goals in creating houses for my fairy village is that each house is unique. The other goal is that they light up at night for a little extra magic. For this house I used glow in the dark duct tape to add the magic.

  • quart size can
  • dry erase marker
  • plastic zipper bag
  • towel or no-slip mat
  • nail
  • hammer
  • fairy wish door locket (made by Darice)
  • wire cutters
  • silicon adhesive

This could be a cool way to upcycle an old paint can. However, I bought a can at the craft store. It was less than $2 so I decided to splurge.

Remove the lid and use a dry erase marker to draw a pattern on one side of the can. I freehanded some swirly vines.

Eventually, you are going to punch holes in the can where you draw your design. If you have a flimsy aluminum can like mine, punching the holes could crush the can.

So, before I go on, I just want to thank my wonderful mother-in-law for sharing this next little idea that she saw on a TV show.

Put a plastic zipper bag in the can and fill it with water. (My can leaked when I filled it with water. That's why I used the zipper bag.) Then set the filled can in the freezer. Once it's frozen, you can punch holes in the can without crushing it.

Note: The bottom of my can did bulge out a bit after freezing it, but for my purpose it wasn't a big deal.)

After the water is completely frozen, set the can on a small towel or non-slip mat so it doesn't roll around while you work. A towel will also absorb the condensation on the outside of the can.

Use a hammer and nail to poke holes along the design you drew.

My holes are about 1/4 inch apart, but do what works for the size of nail you are using.

Once you have poked holes along the entire design, let the ice melt in your sink or outside. Remove the plastic bag and wipe any remaining marker from the can.

These little fairy wish doors were my splurge for my fairy village. They are actually lockets that you can find in the jewelry and beading section at the craft store. (I got mine at my local Joann's.)

For a fairy house, you won't need the loop where a necklace would go.

Use a wire cutter to trim off the loop.

Now, you can attach the door with a bit of silicon adhesive.

Let's add a little fairy magic!

Stick some strips of glow in the dark duct tape to the back of the can. When light shines in the holes it charges up the tape so at night it lights up.

That's it. Tap on the lid and your fairy house is ready for it's magical residents to move in.
