Inspirations - Holly Guenther

Introducing Holly from Kimchi Kawaii ®. She's a pretty cool artist based in California.

Her adorable work is available for purchase on Zazzle, Redbubble and Storeenvy.

Even though Holly didn't mention it in her interview, she's also an amazing photographer. You may notice that she was the one who took the pictures for my last artist inspiration piece about Anne Schellman. Talented and modest!

What do you create?

My main focus these days are pieces for my brand. I do vector artwork with Illustrator that is influenced by the Japanese ‘kawaii’ (cute) style in pop culture. Most of my designs are centered around puns. I’ve always loved coming up with puns and figured I could start earning some money with them. I turn them into prints, accessories and little plushies. I also have a sub-brand called Frosted Fleur de Lis that covers my more handcrafted items. Most of my things there are sweets related like my cake boxes, fake cupcakes and candy looking rings/jewelry.

How does culture influence your work?

I pull a lot from Japanese pop culture, my Kimchi style is influenced by the kawaii (cute) style. I also try to keep up with trends online and will some times pull in references to stuff in the news.

What is your favorite craft or hobby?

My favorite hobby is doing anything art related. I’m always creating something – either a traditional or digital design, crafting or sewing. If I’m not actively creating, I’m thinking (plotting, lol) my next project. I’ll even run through the steps mentally when walking or commuting to work (don’t worry, I’m on the bus, not driving while in arty la-la land).

When did you realize your creative passion?

I’ve been doing art all my life and from an early age knew I wanted to do something art related. At the time, I would tell people I was going to work for Disney.

Have you ever experienced a dry spell when you put your crafting aside? If so, what brought you back to crafting?

Yes, I get those from time to time and it’s frustrating to me, but deep down I know it’s probably that I’m just a tad burnt out and I need to recharge my creative batteries. I tend to be one of those people who just goes like the Energizer Bunny. Anyway, I usually just ride it out and wait to feel the urge to create again. It does come sooner or later.

Why do you create?

I think it’s just something that’s a part of me, like breathing. I love making things and challenging myself. I don’t think I could not create. I know I get kind of grumpy when I feel like other life responsibilities are getting in the way of art creation.

What other interests do you have?

Other than art???? Lol! Well, I do love to travel. I wish I could do more of it. There’s so much to see out beyond our own little cities/states/countries. I love learning about/experiencing other cultures. And that in turn often inspires my artwork and can kick off a whole new creative run.

What keeps you busy when you are not crafting?

Since I have so many art related interests, it means that there is rarely a time when I’m not doing some form of art or crafting. But when I’m not, I’m usually working on marketing my business, updating my many online shops or actually at an anime con where I sell my items.

What are your favorite materials to work with?

For my crafted things, I use a lot of stuff from the hardware store like caulking and spackle. The caulking smells like vinegar until it sets, but it’s so fun to put through a pastry bag and make frosting swirls with on my items. I joke that my local hardware store must think I’m running a bathroom repair business for all the tubes of caulk I go through.

Is crafting a hobby, business or something in between?

It started out as a hobby, but I’ve always wanted to make a living off my art. Right now, I’m still working a full time job, but I’m hoping with hard work, my business will grow enough for me to do my art full time.

Where do you do most of your crafting?

It’s kind of funny, I recently moved into a two bedroom apartment with the intent that one room would be fully devoted to art. Silly me. I guess it would be more accurate to say that I moved into a two bedroom so I could have one room fully devoted to sleeping. I design and draw in the art room. I sew and craft in the main room and kitchen. I glue stuff and do some of the frosting out on the porch. I think my neighbors think I’m crazy!

How do you deal with crafting failure?

I often have these crazy big ideas that don’t quite work out in actuality. I remember when I first started making my fake cupcakes, I tried this one method and it was a huge failure and a big mess and my friend was with me and she took me out to the hardware store to get new stuff right away cause she said it looked like I was going to cry, lol! It’s disappointing, but I’m also stubborn, so I’ll keep hacking away at it until I can get something I’m happy with.
