Square Crochet Motifs Pattern: The Granny Square

Crochet Pattern Tutorial: How to make a Granny SquareMaybe it has something to do with being raised in Minnesota, but if you visit our home you will likely find an afghan in just about every room. That may seem of silly since we now live in Tucson, Arizona, and from May-October the temperatures here are scorching hot. Let me tell you, even on the hottest day it gets chilly when the AC is blowing down on you, so it's nice to snuggle up under a cozy afghan.

Right now I am working on a spring inspired, purple, green and white afghan for our master bedroom. I am using a variety of 7-inch square motifs that have a flowery, garden theme. I'll be sharing the patterns for each of the blocks as I work.

I started with the beloved Granny Square. This is a staple pattern in any crocheted block motif afghan.

Crochet Tip: Weave the yarn tails into the back loop of each stitch to help conceal them.
Rnd 3: Join pale plum yarn with a sl st in any ch 2 corner space, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc)  in same ch 2 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in each space along the side, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next ch 2 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space along the side* 3 times, sl st in first dc, fasten off.
Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 3 with frosty green.
Rnd 5: Repeat Rnd 3 with white.
Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 3 with pale plum.

Of course you can make an entire afghan out of Granny Squares like this one by piecing them together, but I hope you'll come back to see some of the other motifs I am designing for my garden afghan.

Happy Crocheting!
