Tutorial: Paper Flower Ornament

Tutorial: How to make an upcycled paper flower ornament. These would make greaty party decorations. In my last post I shared how to make a kusudama paper flower using upcycled magazine pages. It's a fun little project that even the kids may enjoy. However, once you get started, you may find that you just can't stop yourself from creating dozens of pretty paper flowers. I'm speaking from experience here.

I found so many colorful magazine pages, that before long I had paper blossoms everywhere. Then I realized you can join the blooms together to create a stunning ornament. These could even be used as festive party or shower decorations that guests could take home as favors. You could even make these to celebrate Earth Day (April 22, 2014).

Since I had already used it to make my flowers, I continued using the sample of Recycled School Glue that I received from Nine Lives Products to create my flower ball. This is a really neat product because the glue is made with recycled styrofoam and plant based ingredients. I really like the earth-friendly concept.

  • 12 paper flowers
  • recycled school glue
  • 18-24 inches of ribbon, yarn or string
  • paper clips

Make 12 paper flowers. (Here's my tutorial if you need it.)
Apply a thin strip of glue to two neighboring petals and attach a second flower to the first.
I found it helpful to slip a couple paper clips onto the petals to hold them as the glue dries.
Use glue to attach a third flower as shown. Secure with paper clips until the glue dries.
Continue gluing the flowers together. The first flower should be attached to five others. This creates half of the flower ball.
Create the second half of the flower ball with the remaining six flowers.

Let the glued halves dry and remove the paper clips.
Tie a knot in your ribbon or string to form a loop. You can leave a bit of a tail if you'd like or trim the loose ends off.
Place one half of the flower ball upside down on your work surface and apply glue.
Set the ribbon loop across the flower ball making sure it is glued in.
Set the second half of the ball onto the first.
Again, it may be helpful to paper clip the two halves together while the glue dries.

Once the glue has dried, you can remove the paperclips and hang your bouquet.
