If you have ever browsed Crafty Saturday Show and Sell, you have likely seen this artist's work.

I'd like to introduce Diana Webb from Joliefemme on Etsy. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and crafts delightful handbags and fabric accessories.

Her philosophy in life is to be free, generous, gentle, earnest and kind. As a crafter, her philosophy is to take risks and try new things.

What do you create and why?

I create and design handbags and fabric accessories from sunglasses cases to full sized wallets as well as gift items for children like stuffed animal carriers and teeny totes. When I’m not working on items for my shop, I love to sew clothing and scrapbook photos and make stamped paper cards, too. I feel that objects in life should be beautiful and useful as well. I am always trying to create something that fits both qualities.

Where do you do most of your crafting?

I craft at home in my studio, but sewing on snaps and embroidery projects go with me anywhere I will get the chance to sit for a few minutes. I like to keep my hands busy.

What or who inspires you?

The love of fabric really moves me! I love cheerful color and prints from vintage to modern. I am inspired by Frida Kahlo’s art and Dia de los Muertos style fabrics and art. I love a streamlined look without too many pleats, ruffles or embellishments. I let the print of the fabric speak for itself.

How does culture influence your work?

New Mexico is a place with strong cultural influences from the Hispanic and Native American arts and I try to incorporate the style elements I admire in my work.

What other interests do you have?

I speak, read, and write both French and Spanish and love to read and watch movies in those languages. I am following my love of learning by learning new languages in my spare time, including Latin and Italian.

What projects are you the most proud of?

When I finish or improve a design that I have struggled with or worked many hours to prototype, it is the most satisfying feeling in the world.

Is crafting a hobby, business, or something in between?

I have always crafted and created but I started my shop with the encouragement of a friend and who introduced me to local craft shows and selling on Etsy in 2008. I would like to surpass my goal of 400 total sales on Etsy and make a good showing at the local shows this year. It’s a thrill every time I make a sale.

How did you choose your shop name?

I am a French major and loved the cachet of a French name. I think my shop name Joliefemme is chic and elegant just like the customers I serve.

What is the strangest thing you have ever created?

I do custom orders and have created many items. One that I thought was a bit strange, was when a customer asked for a mandolin vegetable slicer cover from cotton fabric. I still don’t know how that worked and didn’t get cut up, but my customer was happy and as long as there are precise measurements I can make whatever they want.

Have you ever experienced a dry spell when you put your crafting aside? If so, what brought you back to crafting?

I haven’t experienced any time when some sort of craft isn’t freeing and therapeutic for me. I may stop embroidering for a time and start scrapbooking but I’m never far from a new or fun craft activity.

How do you deal with crafting failures?

Mistakes happen. If something I sew doesn’t work, I always try to recycle the fabric into something else. I do the same with paper projects and salvage what I can anytime. Sometimes I think you just need to let it go and move on chalking it up to a learning experience.
What keeps you busy when you are not creating?

I stay busy with my pet cats, chickens and turtles. I am learning to garden and create landscaping in my yard too. My family loves to hike and bike and we try to get out as often as we can.

What is a typical day for you?

My typical day starts early but the activities vary greatly. As a homeschooling mom, my kids are my first priority and it is always important for us to spend time working together. I try to make time for crafting in the afternoon and sometimes in the evening. I try to stay active with my online community on Etsy and I commit every morning to promoting my teams.

What is an ideal day for you?

An ideal day is a day that involves some travel and cultural enrichment. I want to stimulate my mind and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors as well as interesting museums. That’s why Albuquerque is the perfect place for me to live. I enjoy the food, the arts, and the sunshine whenever I can.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself, your craft, or business tips to help others with small crafting businesses?

I would like to say that I feel there are many talented people in the world and I encourage them to share their gifts with others, whether through teaching or making and selling. It makes our world more beautiful and rich to know that someone created your useful and everyday items by hand.
