Sewing Tutorial: Fabric Headband

Sewing Tutorial: How to make a fabric headbandOne of the trends in fashion right now is fabric headbands. My daughter has an assortment of them in a variety of colors and prints. She always looks so cute wearing them that I was inspired to make a headband with some scraps of fabric I had leftover after making myself a skirt.

If you like the picture of the skirt at the bottom of this post, it's a slightly modified version of the Marvel-ous flared skirt I made a few weeks ago.

  • 2 1/2 x 12 inch fabric rectangle
  • 6 1/2 x 16 inch fabric rectangle
  • 6 1/2 inches of 1/2 inch wide knit elastic
  • iron
  • basic sewing supplies

The smaller fabric rectangle will be the elastic cover and the larger one is the band that goes over your hair.

Fold the short ends of each rectangle over 1/4 inch, wrong sides together, and press.
Fold each piece of fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin and stitch with a 1/4 inch allowance.
Turn the larger piece right side out and press so that the seam is the center line of the piece.
Now turn the smaller piece right side out.

I did this by pinning a large safety pin to one end.
Turn the pin so it goes into the fabric tube.
Carefully push the pin through the tube then pull until the fabric is right side out. This takes a little patience.
Press the elastic cove so that the seam is the center line of the fabric.
Next, insert the elastic into the elastic cover.

Again, a safety pin can be a handy tool. Pin the end of the elastic and pull it through the tube.
Pin each end of the elastic cover to the ends of the elastic. Stitch 1/8 inch from each end to secure the elastic.
Position the elastic cover over the band as shown so they overlap 1/2 inch.
Fold the bottom edge of the band over the elastic cover.
Then fold the top edge over the bottom edge.
Pin and stitch 1/4 inch from the edge of the band.
Repeat the process on the other side of the headband.

Make sure your fabric isn't twisted when you position the elastic cover over the band.
Fold up the bottom edge of the band.
Then fold down the top edge.

Pin and stitch 1/4 inch from the band edge as before.
It's that easy to make a fabric headband from a couple small scraps.
