Crochet 101: Half Double Crochet

Crochet 101: How to half double crochetWhat do you get when you cross a single crochet and a double crochet? A half double crochet. No joke. (I still haven't figured out the math on that, though.)

This post is a continuation of my Crochet 101 series. If you have missed any topics so far or just need a crochet refresher:

Crochet 101: Slip Knot and Chain
Crochet 101: Single Crochet
Crochet 101: Double Crochet

I'm using cotton yarn for the series, but you can practice your stitches with any type of yarn that's handy.

  • Lily Sugar 'N Cream Yarn
  • H8 (5 mm) crochet hook

If you are continuing your work from the previous lessons, when you reach the end of a row, chain 2 and turn the piece. This counts as your first hdc (half double crochet), so skip the first stitch of the row and work your next hdc into the second stitch.

Bring the yarn over your hook, back to front.

Then insert the hook into the next stitch.

Bring the yarn over your hook again.

Gently pull the yarn through the stitch.

Bring the yarn over your hook.

Gently pull the yarn through all three loops.

That's a half double crochet!

Keep practicing your stitches. In my next post I'll share my pattern for a beginner-friendly washcloth that you can make with the stitches you have learned in the last four lessons.
