Knit Pattern: Seed Stitch Washcloths

Free Pattern: Learn how to knit a basic cotton washcloth using moss stitch. When you use variegated yarn, you never quite know if a color pattern will emerge. Sometimes, if you are using the perfect yarn and stitch pattern in just the right size,  you get an incredible design.

That's exactly what happened as I was making some knit washcloths for Christmas gifts. I have been using a variety of different stitches and colors of yarns, but this combo is the big winner!

It's quick and easy, perfect for beginning knitters, but it looks like there was some fancy color work involved.

  • 1 - 2 oz ball of Lily Sugar 'N Cream 100% cotton (shown in Fruit Punch)
  • Us size 9 knitting needles

I didn't work a gauge swatch for this project, but my finished washcloths were about 8 1/2 inches square. I was able to make two washcloths with a single 2 oz skein of yarn, but there was very little yarn left over, so don't leave super long tails.

CO 31

Row 1: *k1, p1* across to last stitch, k1, turn.

Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 8 1/2 inches from cast on edge (approx 42 rows total).

Bind off.

The result, a purple, green, blue and white plaid. Give them as gifts or indulge yourself in your own personal spa day!

Use moss stitch to knit a plaid, cotton washcloth. Great pattern for beginners.
