Has this ever happened to you? You're knitting a project in the round (like a hat, socks or mittens) and after a few rounds you notice that your cast on edge has odd gaps or uneven stitches. Today I have five tips that will make casting on in the round a breeze so your edges always look neat and tidy.
Thanks to Skacel for providing the addi FlipStix and Turbo Rocket needles that were used in this demonstration. These products are available locally at many yarn shops and online at Makers' Mercantile.
Casting On in the Round
Tip #1 - After you cast on your stitches, don't turn your work. The first stitch you knit will be in the first you cast on.
Tip #2 - Before knitting your first stitch, make sure your cast on stitches aren't twisted.
Tip #3 - The fastest way to avoid a gap between the last and first cast on stitches is to knit the first few stitches with both the yarn tail and working yarn.
Tip #4 - A better way to avoid a gap between the last and first cast on stitches is to reverse the order of those two stitches on your needles.
Tip #5 - The neatest way to avoid a gap between the last and first cast on stitches is to cast on one extra stitch then pass it over the first cast on stitch.
