Of all the short row shaping methods, wrap and turn short rows are probably the most commonly used. Among other things, wrap and turn short rows can be used to shape sock toes and heels. The process is fairly easy to knit, understand and remember.
Thanks to Oink Pigments for providing the yarn and Skacel for providing the needles used in this tutorial. These products are available locally at many yarn shops and online at Oink Pigments and Makers' Mercantile.
Before You Begin
Wrap and turn (W&T), is a simplified term for what happens at the end of every short row. I like to think of the process slightly differently.
- slip a stitch (purlwise from the left needle to the right)
- wrap the working yarn around the side of the stitch
- return the slipped stitch to the left needle
- finish the wrap and set-up for the next stitch by bringing the working yarn between the needles
- turn
At the end of the shaping process, the wraps are worked together with the stitches they are wrapped around to minimize any gaps at the sides of the shaping. On the knit side it's similar to a skp or ssk. On the purl side it's like a p2tog.
