Unlike the increases we have explored so far, the yarn over and open make 1 increases are neutral increases and don't slant in a particular direction.
Thanks to Ewe Ewe Yarns for providing all of the colorful Wooly Worsted yarn I'm knitting with in this series. Also, thanks to Skacel for providing the DPNs used in this series. They are available locally at many yarn shops and online at Makers' Mercantile.
Tip - If a yarn over is preceded by a purl, the yarn is already at the front, so you only need to bring it over the working needle to form the new stitch.
Tip - An open make 1 can be used to correct a mistake if you forget a yarn over in the previous row.

Lesson 1
Yarn Over (YO)
Bring the yarn forward between the needles. Bring the yarn over the working (right-hand) needle. Notice the yarn is wrapped counter-clockwise around the working needle. The YO is unanchored until the next stitch is formed.Tip - If a yarn over is preceded by a purl, the yarn is already at the front, so you only need to bring it over the working needle to form the new stitch.
Open Make 1 (OM1) or Open Bar Increase
Locate the top, horizontal strand that leads into the next stitch on the left needle. Insert the right needle under the strand, from front to back. Knit the lifted strand. Notice that unlike a standard M1, the lifted strand is not twisted and remains open.
Tip - An open make 1 can be used to correct a mistake if you forget a yarn over in the previous row.

A YO increase looks the same as an OM1, but it creates a larger hole, or eyelet.
