When knitting sweaters from the top down, there comes a time when the sleeves are divided from the body. Typically the sleeve stitches are temporarily held on a long piece of waste yarn. If you use a simple wrapped provisional cast on to create the underarm stitches of the body, taking advantage of the waste yarn that is already in place, there will be no need to pick up stitches across the underarm later.
