Transitioning from Rows to Rounds in Socks Heels

Sock Knitting Tutorial: How to prevent holes when transitioning from rows to rounds after the heel shaping
When you knit socks, the majority of the leg and foot is worked in rounds, but some or all of the heel shaping is created by knitting back and forth in rows. Unfortunately, when you return to knitting in rounds after the heel shaping is complete, it's not unusual to get an unsightly hole on each side of the heel.

Those holes are often caused because there is a height difference of 1-2 rows between the point where you stop working in rows and resume working in rounds again.

For short row heels and flapless gusset heels (top-down or toe-up) and toe-up gusset and flap heels you can minimize the problem by skipping the last WS heel row, then dealing with the final shaping decrease or turning stitch in the next round.
