Gathering is the final piece in my angular study series which began as an attempt to discover what is the steepest smooth angle that can be achieved with my current weaving materials. My study began after reading that the steepest smooth angle you can create in a tapestry weaving is somewhere between 20-30°. I was curious if I would achieve the same results weaving with poppana (bias cut) fabric strips as others do with wool yarn?
All eight of the angular color changes I chose to study are gathered side-by-side in this single piece. After weaving was complete, I discovered that determining which lines were smooth is somewhat subjective. It’s also dependent on the distance between the viewer and the woven piece. However, as predicted my lines become noticeably jagged as the slant becomes greater than 20-30° even though I am weaving with a different material.
