Sometimes in life’s journey one needs to choose how to proceed. As this rug was being woven, I was facing a decision about a life choice. It was not until I completed what I though was a woven experiment in shape and color, and removed the rug from my loom that I could see the bigger picture, the metaphorical flowchart.

  • Decision - Should I expand my professional purpose and skill set by diving into art weaving in addition to utilitarian weaving? Yes.
  • Process - Learn how to implement familiar weaving techniques, in this case clasped weft, in new-to-me ways. Pay attention to how the characteristics of the materials interact with each other.
  • Decision - Do I like the way my work is progressing? Yes.
  • Process - Notice how elements in the world around me relate to each other. Simplify and express those relationships through warp and weft, string and fabric.
  • Decision - Where will this practice take me?
