After 23 years of endless summer in the Arizona desert, I find myself really enjoying fall in the south. I love the transition of color, temperature and mood.

After our kayaks are stored for the summer, we spend a lot of time on the weekends hiking the nearby trails rather than paddling the waterways. On one such walk, as we crunched through the fallen leaves, I couldn't help but notice one deep red, star-like leaf standing out amongst its neighbors. It was a vision I had to take to the loom where the leaf transformed itself into something I didn't anticipate, a sort of forest fairy.
