Rooted is a diptych depicting growth emerging from figurative tree roots. The piece developed as an angular sample project used to show achievable angles in tapestry-like weaving and at what inclination the angles transition from smooth lines to jagged steps.

Following Finnish American rug weaving tradition, Rooted was handwoven with upcycled home textile fabrics and cotton rug warp on a hand-built floor loom. To ensure both parts of the diptych would be the same length, they were woven side-by-side. This is an unconventional approach and required the panels to be lashed together while weaving so the selvedges, or sides, remain straight.

Artistic weaving with poppana (bias-cut fabric strips) on a rug loom deviates from both standard floor rug and tapestry weaving making experimentation necessary to discover undocumented information. Rooted provided technical insights that can be referenced and built upon during the creation of shapes and forms in future handwoven projects.
