Sand + Sea 1

My weaving is often inspired by something I have seen or experienced in nature. However, there are times when I elect to more deeply examine an aspect from a previous project and/or experiment with a weaving technique. The Sand and Sea series is an example of the latter.

After creating a number of utilitarian rag rugs, Shoreline was one of my first artistic weavings. I wove it with 1 ½-inch fabric strips cut on the grain and used a clasped weft technique.

For my Sand and Sea series, I studied the same frothy boundary between the land and water using thinner, bias cut fabric strips which compress better and nearly hide the warp threads. Sand and Sea 1 features organic, non-linear boundaries as I dip my toes into a visual color blending technique known as hatching.
