I've never considered myself an outdoorsy person, but when we moved to north Alabama in 2021, I found myself drawn to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge which is just minutes from our home. We drive across the waterway nearly every time we leave our house. It didn't take long to realize that being ON the water would be a lot more fun than just driving OVER the water and we invested in a pair of kayaks.

Whenever we paddle there are always herons and egrets hunting for their next meal at the water's edge. We are frequently surprised by fish jumping nearby. Occasionally we spot alligators that quickly submerge and disappear when they notice our presence. Despite all the wildlife, the water itself is often the focus of my attention. The flow, the viscosity, the light and reflections. Every time we paddle the water looks and feels different and I can't help but pause in wonder and awe.

I stop frequently to appreciate the texture of the water and take inspiration photos that will later be used at the loom.

Waver
