Whoever thinks the desert is just a vast expanse of dry, dusty plants has never seen the cacti bloom. Barrel cactus produce bright orange, yellow or pink flowers depending on the variety. Be careful picking the fruit. There aren't any spines on the fruit, but those "fishhook" spines bite.
