At least once a week I try to get out for a walk in the woods to take a break from my studio work and refresh. My favorite local trail has markers identifying different types of trees along the path. Seeing those markers week after week got me thinking about weaving a series of tree-inspired pieces. First Birch. Then Mossy Oak. Now Pine.

This piece also allowed me to experiment with a weaving technique known as hatching. Hatching is a way of blending colors to create a sort of visual depth.

I began by considering colors and compare their values.

Geometrically, I used hatching to create a stacked, triangular, pine-like structure.

In addition to defining the overall shape of the tree, hatching creates slender, linear color transitions reminiscent of prickly pine needles.
