Yarn Over + Open Make One | Photo Tutorial
Unlike the increases we have explored so far, the yarn over and open make 1 increases are neutral increases and don't slant in a particular direction.
Knit Inc Sampler Squares Lesson 4
Pattern: Knit Inc Sampler Squares
Yarn: Ewe Ewe Yarns Wooly Worsted shown in color 85-Lavender
Needles: skacel by addi Natura Bamboo US size 8 (5 mm) DPNs
Yarn Over (YO)
Bring the yarn forward between the needles. Bring the yarn over the working (right-hand) needle. Notice the yarn is wrapped counter-clockwise around the working needle. The YO is unanchored until the next stitch is formed.
Tip: If a yarn over is preceded by a purl, the yarn is already at the front, so you only need to bring it over the working needle to form the new stitch.
A YO increase looks the same as an OM1, but it creates a larger hole, or eyelet.
Open Make 1 (OM1) or Open Bar Increase
Locate the top, horizontal strand that leads into the next stitch on the left needle. Insert the right needle under the strand, from front to back. Knit the lifted strand. Notice that unlike a standard M1, the lifted strand is not twisted and remains open.
Tip: An open make 1 can be used to correct a mistake if you forget a yarn over in the previous row.
An OM1 increase looks the same as a YO, but it creates a smaller hole, or eyelet.
